I'm doing an appalling job of living up to my origial promise of 2 posts a week. I guess in the world of vintage computing there isn't much in the way of news.

For one, I would like to belatedly congratulate Ron Wiesen for his recent win of the 27th Model 100 Programming Contest with his amazing program.

Secondly there's a rather major development that recently happened: I got my server up and running.
Currently, the server is a 500MHz Pentium III running Windows XP SP3, and can be found at retro-net.ath.cx, which brings me to the name: The Micro 100 Retro-Box Network, shortened/styallized simply as [..RETRONET..] . I have HTTP, FTP, IRC, and a Quake I dedicated server. It's pretty slow to load images, but I'll be upgrading it soon (hopefully), as well as adding a Synchronet telnet BBS (perhaps the failed Nytetyme project could live on), getting my domain set up (retro-box.net), and setting up an email server with username@retro-box.net.

The way that affects this blog is that it will be a little more varied, with some modern computers stuff as well as some older computer stuff, and links to my youtube videos at RetroNetVideos.

Random goodies...

Club100.org, one of the best Model 100 resources in the webosphere, is jam-packed with dozens of interesting stories, features, programs, and documentation. Down towards the bottom is a little section entitled "News -&- Stories", with a subsection "Stories with Photos". In this subsection are many interesting stories like the Monthly Computer Meeting at Melo's Pizza, photos of Club 100 at the Computer Show, how Rick restores Model Ts, Model T and Model Ts, and a whole lot more!

There are also some interesting software and hardware projects that haven't been heard of in a while, I'll list some of them here, and a complete index of all hardware projects can be found at the Bitchin100 wiki.

MTCPM:

Very cool! The venerable old operating system: CP/M on the Model 100! MTCPM runs on Remem, and the soon-to-be-released REX2, providing some software compatibility with other CP/M computers. Very neat!

MTHD:

This is something that has been rendered unneeded by the NADSBox, but is still a cool concept. A device that allows one to connect a regular IDE hard drive to the Model T bus, and then write and read to it.

Mikrokolor:

Used to be produced and sold, the Mikrokolor is a color/graphics interface for the Model 100, giving you a larger screen and COLOR! Unfortunately, the Mikrokolor is no longer produced.

That's all for now, several interesting little bits and bytes of information for ya!

80c85 DIY microcomputer

Looks like someone had too much time on his hand. Diskettes should be rolled up and stored in pencil holders.
(2) Diskettes should be cleaned and waxed once a week. Microscopic metal particles may be removed by waving a powerful magnet over the surface of the disk. Any stubborn metal shavings can be removed with scouring powder and steel wool. When waxing a diskette, make sure the surface is even. This will allow the diskette to spin faster, resulting in better access time.
(3) Do not fold diskettes unless they do not fit into the drive. "Big" Diskettes may be folded and used in "Little" drives.
(4) Never insert a diskette into the drive upside down. The data can fall off the surface of the disk and jam the intricate mechanics of the drive.
(5) Diskettes cannot be backed up by running them through a photo copy machine. If your data is going to need to be backed up, simply insert TWO diskettes into your drive. Whenever you update a document, the data will be written onto both disks. A handy tip for more legible backup copies: Keep a container of iron filings at your desk. When you need to make two copies, sprinkle iron filings liberally between the diskettes before inserting them into the drive.
(6) Diskettes should not be removed or inserted from the drive while the red light is on or flashing. Doing so could result in smeared or possibly unreadable text. Occasionally, the red light remains flashing in what is known as a "hung" or "hooked" state. If your system is hooking, you will probably need to insert a few coins before being allowed to access the slot.
(7) If your diskette is full and needs more storage space, remove the disk from the drive and shake vigourously for two minutes. This will pack the data enough (data compression) to allow for more storage. Be sure to cover all openings with scotch tape to prevent loss of data.
(8) Data access time may be greatly improved by cutting more holes in the diskette jacket. This will provide more simultaneous access points to the disk.
(9) Periodically spray diskettes with insecticide to prevent system bugs from spreading.....
(10) You can keep your data fresh by storing disks in the vegetable compartment of your refrigerator. Disks may be frozen, but remember to un thaw by microwaving or briefly immersing in boiling water.
(11) "Little" diskettes must be removed from their box prior to use. These containers are childproof to prevent tampering by unknowledgeable youngsters.
(12) You can recover data from a damaged disk by using the DOS command: FORMAT /U or alternatively by scratching new sector marks on the disk with a nail file.
(13) Diskettes become "hard" with age. It's important to back up your "hard" disks before they become too brittle to use.
(14) Make sure you label your data. Staples are a good way to permanently affix labels to your disks.

Fort Apocalypse's Online Emulators

This is pretty cool: http://www.geocities.com/fortapocalypse/games.html

Recent Site Updates

Here's a list of recent changes that I've made to this website:

1. After pulling up his case, I realized that this was his fifth call to us over the last two days, all regarding the same product. He was trying to add a 3D accelerator card to his system and could not get it to work. He had spoken to us four times and to his computer manufacturer twice. It was still not functional.
Customer: "I hope you can help me out. I have made several calls now and cannot fix this problem."
Tech Support: "Well, I'll see what I can do. So, I am seeing here that the card is not being detected by your computer. Is that right?"
Customer: "Correct. When I boot up, Windows never detects the card. Previous techs had me run the 'Add New Hardware' wizard, and we checked the device manager, but there wasn't anything there."
Tech Support: "Ok. Have you tried putting the card into another slot?"
Customer: "What do you mean?"
Tech Support: "Well, if for some reason the system does not see the card in this slot, perhaps putting the card in another slot will help."
Customer: "How do I do that? Do I have to take it apart?"
Tech Support: "Yes, you will have to take the case off."
Customer: "Ok, just a second.... Ok, the case is off now."
Tech Support: "Do you have any more PCI slots free?"
Customer: "I am not sure."
Tech Support: "How many PCI slots do you have in your system?"
Customer: "Umm...eight."
Tech Support: "You have eight PCI slots in your system?"
Customer: "Yes."
Tech Support: "How many white PCI slots do you have?"
Customer: "Ummm...five."
Tech Support: "Ok. Of those five, how many have something in them?"
Customer: "One."
Tech Support: "One? And is this the accelerator card?"
Customer: "No. Oh hey, is that card I got supposed to fit into one of these slots?"
Tech Support: "Yes, that's the idea. Where is the accelerator card currently?"
Customer: "Well, it comes with that small black cable, so I have it on the outside of the computer, hooked up with that cable you sent with it."
I walked him through the install process, and everything was fine. This was his seventh call to some form of support, and the card never even made it into the computer. Sigh.

ComputerHumor #6

I recently purchased a Sony Mavica still camera, which, for those unfamiliar, is a digital camera that stores snapshots on a floppy disk. My Model 100 is running the BBS100.BA BBS client for the Model 100. (You can find that program at ftp://ftp.whtech.com/club100/tel/bbs100.ba for the actual program and ftp://ftp.whtech.com/club100/tel/bbs100.do for the manual). The Model 100 is connected via 25-pin serial (cereal. mmmmmm.) port to a serial modem.

The Modem

The Modem is a 1200 baud SmarTEAM 1200AT with auto-answer/dialing and pulse/tone dialing modes. I'm not sure what baud rate to use, I'm thinking I'll go for broke and use 1200. This modem is connected to the Model 100, and allows it to connect to the remote (person dialing in) computer.

The Connection

Unfortunately, the computer is nowhere near a phone line jack. Great. I'm going to get past this 'little bump' by hacking a broken (dialing circuits fryed) wireless telephone into a wireless telephone jack. I am going to remove the speaker and microphone from the handset, as well as the push-button keypad. I will then have a handset with four bare wires and a transmitter/receiver. These wires will be hooked up to a female telephone jack which will be glued onto the phone, and then plugged into the modem. I will then remove all of the circuitry from the base except for the transmitter/receiver, and it will plug into the wall. I will then be able to hook my computer wirelessly to the wall. I will be following this project in my posts, so check bask often!

Radiohead with a ZX Spectrum

I know this is off-topic, but it's just so cool!
